Tensile Testing Machines

The most common type of testing carried out for nearly all materials is tensile testing and a number of common mechanical properties can be determined in this way which provide critical information about plastic materials. Common properties include ultimate tensile strength (UTS), elongation, modulus of elasticity and yield strength.

Just these few properties can tell us a lot about a material and its behaviour, it can tell us the maximum stress the material can endure, whether the material is brittle or ductile in nature by calculating how much the material deforms under stress, whether the material resists or allows deformation and at what point the material will stretch beyond its recoverable limits. Testing materials in this way provides essential information for designers and engineers enabling them to tune and alter the composition of the material to optimise the desired mechanical properties.
